Gayle L. Kartman, 73, of 36 Main Street, Randolph, passed away into the loving arms of God on Monday, March 5, 2018, in her home with her husband Dan and her loving daughters and care givers Gretchen and Sarah by her side.

She was born August 10, 1944 in Mars, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late Robert W. and Helen Werner Anderson.

She was a graduate of Mars High School, received her Bachelors in Education from Edinboro University and her Masters in English from Fredonia State College.

Gayle was a transplant from her large Western Pennsylvania family near Mars, Pa. After moving to Randolph in 1968, she embraced her new community and attended the Randolph United Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and later did the same at Levant Wesleyan Church in Falconer. Gayle has been active for the past 30 years with her Church family at Faith Bible Chapel in Randolph, where she has taught Children’s Church, was an Awana Ministry helper and attended the Tuesday Ladies Bible Study.

Gayle retired in 2002 from the Randolph Academy, where she was an English teacher and had served as the school’s Union President. In earlier years, she had co-owned with Mary Wishart, the Cinnamon Bear craft store in Randolph.

Following retirement Gayle was an active volunteer; she was a member of the Randolph Lions Club, serving as a 4 time President, past Club Secretary and was recently honored on December 21, 2017 with the International Melvin Jones Fellow. She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Randolph Free Library and helped in their new building project come to fruition. For many years, Gayle taught GED classes in the Library basement, helping many receive their high school diplomas.

Gayle was an avid reader, enjoyed friendships, her family and sharing her faith. Her closest friends knew she was a cow girl at heart, and that her first love was Elvis Pressley. Gayle will forever be missed at the Werner family thanksgiving, a family tradition she dearly loved.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Kartman, daughters; Gretchen VanRensselaer and husband Howie and their children; Rachel, Gage and Lucy of Randolph; Sarah Anglin and husband Chris and their children; Amelia, Will and Georgia of East Lyme, CT; Siblings, Gary (Marge) Anderson of Tempe, AZ, Howard (Gayle) Anderson of Geneva, OH, Virginia (the late Mike) Crist of Lake Burton, Ga., sister–in-law, Joyce Anderson of Texas. She is additionally survived by many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Ray Anderson.

The family will receive family and friends from 3-7 Friday (March 9, 2018) in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church Street, Randolph, NY. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday in the First Baptist Church of Randolph. Burial will follow in the Randolph Cemetery.
